Ethical Tips for Future Marketers
Hello Future Marketer
Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing. Before you begin your journey, I would like to advise you on ethical best practices to consider when implementing your integrated marketing campaigns. As marketers, we are constantly seeking creative ways to increase sales and revenue for our organizations, so much that we may lose sight of our morals. Many often overlook the importance of being ethical, but the lack of exploration on this subject can be a major pitfall for your customers and your business. The American Marketing Association has designed a standard of ethics they believe all marketers should follow to ensure it commits us to providing the “highest standard of ethical norms.”
Put the Customer First
First, let’s keep in mind that you serve your society. It is important and your duty as marketers to act in good faith and display fairness toward our customers. This means we foster truth about our products and services. Avoiding puffery, false claims and deception in our dealings can lead to potential harm of our consumers. For example, if we were selling a weight loss product, and we told our audience that losing weight is “easy and they would lose 5 pounds in one day,” we are promoting a farfetched statement that is untrue. If your product could not deliver that result, not only will you have a bunch of lawsuits at your company’s front door, you would have a negative impact on your customers and violating the ethical standards of the AMA.
Embrace Ethical standards
Be honest, responsible, fair, respectful, transparent and acting not only as marketers, but as good citizens. The benefit of having integrity in business is that it enhances consumer confidence in our products. Building a reputation of good morale will help establish brand loyalty. Your audience will feel safe and secure knowing that your primary focus is meeting their needs.
Do the Right Thing
There are other areas of concern that we should consider. The AMA will not tolerate brand infringement, conflict of interest, sexual harassment, and personal harassment within the marketing industry. The consequences of such actions will cause legal issues. As a future marketer, you wouldn’t want to harm others nor put your company at risk.
What is the best way to avoid all of this? Simple. Do the right thing! Be smart, be ethical, and look back one of the greatest principles in life. Treat others the way you would want to be treated.
